Getting by With Less

Last week, Thurs or Friday, I happened to catch Oprah. Suzy Orman was on and giving some financial talk. She told the audience that every person needed to live on ½ of the income that they have been living on. I thought, much like the audience members, “I can’t do that”.

Suzy Orman’s rational for this cutback is this: due to the current financial crises people are losing jobs and if you or your significant other loses a job, your income will be cut. Hence it is better to start living as if a job has been cut now rather than wait and it happen.

As I thought about what Ms. Orman was saying I took a little financial test on the Oprah site. The test was designed to give a person an idea of where there is waste. We did have waste in our spending.

Later I realized that I have no current work, no claims have come in at all for the past couple of weeks. No storm work in the immediate future. YIKES! We are already living with less income, plus all of the income that Dale has lost in the past year. Time to tighten the belts major league.

Dale and I had a little meeting, I told him of the Oprah show and where we were headed in the immediate future. We decided then and there to cut back: no eating out at all, no pre-cooked meals, no deli meats and cheeses, cheaper wine and drinking less at night.

Last night we BBQ’d a bag of chicken breasts for salads and sandwiches. Today I made a huge pot of beans and made 22 burritos. Each burrito is in a zip lock bag and in the freezer. Tomorrow when they are frozen I’ll put them into a larger freezer zip lock bag and people can just pull from that for a quick meal. I also made some bars as an experiment but they are made with raisins and dried cranberries. These will make a nice snack.

These things are eco-friendly and healthier. I feel better already!
