A gem of a Claim

Inspecting claims is usually a routine affair but sometimes we get lucky and get one that is a gem.

A few days ago I was given a claim for a person where the original adjuster had quit and never submitted anything for this claim. The claim was given to me as the insured was screaming about nothing being done. I expected to redo the claim and try to calm the insured down.

My husband was off that day so he drove in order that I could work during that time. I had made very clear that I did have an appointment at 8 and gave an ETA but also promised that I would call on the way.

Upon arrival I listened to the insured’s story and asked what promises the old adjuster had made, then did my inspection. As we spoke the insured told me how he had changed careers and we started discussing his business of a “life coach” and our very similar philosophy of life. But we spoke of even more: how doing for someone just is good for one’s soul, the selfish people that we all see and know in life, leaving behind those who will drag you down. We were laughing and talking and then I remembered my poor husband sitting in the car just waiting for me.

Usually my husband goes into the house with me and helps with measurements but this time we had our granddaughter along and he stayed to help her with the laptop. This worked out so well as I was able to just have a good conversation with the insured.

When I came out I was smiling and my spirits had been lifted, the talk had done me more good than it did him I’m sure.
